Glenmorangie Golden Rum Cask Whisky

8/10

Making tasting notes after you’ve been eating Orkney Fudge cheesecake is not normally such a great idea, but in this case it’s inspired! It’s lovely sweet rich oaty (hobnob base to the cheesecake!) smell and taste is only let down by the fact that you want it to be more in your face, but keeps trying to run away!

The smell is of honey, caramel, toffee, ginger and burnt oats - almost like hob-nobs, but with a note of spearmint running through (like eating hobnobs after brushing your teeth!

The taste is smooth and meady, with more burnt sugar and a lingering hint of that toothpaste again, but with a vanilla finish to it which really warms the heart. The delicacy is the only downside - I wanted more of the sugar, the rum, and the toasted oats, but they kept escaping.

If you take too large a gulp, the salt and the seaweed come through, which is a good reason to take it slowly - this isn’t an Islay, and doesn’t need to be - it’s a very pleasant light sweet whisky.

Unfortunately, as it was only ever bottled for Sainsbury, it’s not one that you find around much any more. Originally about £25ish - this really is worth more than that if you can find it.
